Picking out the right Graphic Design Programme for you

If you’ve ever looked around in Singapore for a graphic design programme or a graphic design degree you’ll realize that you have plenty of options. The question is how do you pick out the right one? Well, there are a few things that you have to consider, such as the type of graphic design programme that would best fit your needs.

In order to be able to pick out a suitable programme for yourself, you first have to know the main purpose of your graphic design. Where are you going to be applying it? Print media? Or a website? Depending on your answer you might want to check out the different schools and the many visual communication courses up on offer. Examples of different kinds of graphic design programme in the market:

1) Web Design Programme
Mainly focuses on web design, as its name obviously implies. Web design programmes should teach you basic programming and the use of tools such as Dreamweaver and InDesign.

2) Visual Communication/Design Communication Programme
These programmes will center on the process of purposeful enquiry and utilizing rational and appropriate visual research methods in order to effectively communicate the clients’ needs through fundamental design processes.

3) Motion Design Programme
Motion design programmes focus on the use of interactive media as a vehicle to propagate communication through design.

4) Graphic Design Programme
The basic programme that teaches you to apply the principles of design onto print media.

5) Motion Graphic Design Programme
The Motion Graphic Design Programme is combination of both the graphic design and the motion design programme. Making use of the design principles taught in graphic design and print media, and applying the interactive technology behind it.

There are even schools offering the graphic design degree for those who wish to seek education beyond that of which the diploma can offer, although it is not a common route to take. Most people in the design industry understand that it is not an academic field, but more of a skill-based industry where the most important tool you will need is your portfolio and your experience.
