Environment Design Course

MAGES Institute’s Environment Design course teaches students how to create environments for the entertainment industry, specifically for film and games. The process of emphasizing “believability” is the key component that sets good environment art apart. Additionally, topics such as lighting, style, composition, and visual cues are covered in the course. The environment design (Film/Games) course will enable students to develop quick thumbnails and finalize production-ready pieces. Upon completion, learners will have gained the skills and knowledge needed to create immersive environments that are suitable for entertainment industry needs.

SHORT COURSE OVERVIEW

Creating environments for illustrations (films/games) is a key part of Concept Art. Learn to create believable environments with grounding in familiarity, with lighting, style, composition and visual cues. Create quick thumbnails and final pieces for production needs.

INSTRUCTORS

Zaki brings with him more than 18 years of experience in various creative industries, from illustration to animation. Zaki has been a valuable addition to various companies such as Scrawl Studios and Chip & Toons taking up the responsibility of Animation Director in both places. In addition to his illustrious career, Zaki has also been published 5 times - with his latest comic, Badang, being a historical comic based on the Second World War in Singapore. Zaki completed his formal education with MAGES Institute of Excellence, graduating with a Diploma in Entertainment Design.

Jimmy is a versatile and accomplished Art Direction and Academic Management professional with more than 13+ years of experience across Visual Designing, Art Direction, Program Direction along with Design, Strategic and Operational oversight for start-ups, design agencies, and eminent educational organizations. Accomplished sourcing, organizing, and acquisition of sponsors such as Wacom, Asus, and APOL for the most prominent digital art and technology contest event in Singapore, with a government-owned Singex, at the largest expo IT event - Sitex 2019. Exposed to working with clients in the U.S.A., Taiwan, and Singapore markets, he reckoned as an award-winning professional who has gained the stature of being Singapore’s first and the only Wacom Ultimate Master Artist.

Jimmy Ling

Illustrator | Art Director

Tonia is a Concept Artist and Educator. With a background in Architecture, she started out in Sydney working as a Scenic Artist and Set Designer for AFTRS, as well as an Architectural Designer at Practec Group. She moved to Singapore to pursue Concept Art and graduated from the FZD School of Design. With a passion for environment design and worldbuilding, she currently works as a concept artist and lecturer at MAGES Institute.

Tonia Yau

Kingston Chan is a Concept Development Artist, Art Director, and Educator with over two decades of experience in games, movies, animation, and art production design. Kingston commenced his role as an educator in 2005 when he was invited to develop curriculums for game art, conceptual design, and digital painting at top schools in the field, eventually serving as Senior Art Director at FZD School of Design for the past 14 years. Previously, Kingston has worked extensively in Japan as a Game Artist at SEGA Co. and Koei Tecmo. Upon returning to Singapore, he was appointed as Art Lead at several local game companies to set up next gen 3D pipelines. Kingston believes in the importance of learning art fundamentals and design problem solving, especially in our world of everchanging technology. His broad industry expertise combined with a persistent curiosity in new technologies and work processes shows his dedication in advancing our next generation of artists and designers.

  • Concept Art Production Flow, Importance of Keyplates and Backstory in the Concept Art Process – Environment.
  • Create Thumbnails and rough sketches.

Do I need to know any digital software for this courses?

Candidates with knowledge and/or experience with Adobe Photoshop will have an advantage in this course. For complete beginners, we recommend attending our 1-Day Basic Illustration workshop which is a primer on Adobe Photoshop and fundamentals of concept art.
