7 common interview questions for AR Developers

19 June, 2020

If you’re aiming to excel in the Augmented Reality (AR) field, thorough preparation is crucial for AR Developer interviews. AR’s growing prominence in tech demands a deep understanding of its concepts.

If you’re looking to make your mark in the field of AR, you’ve got to prepare well. Augmented Reality Learning is vital due to the technical nature of this field. You cannot wing an AR Developer interview. Mostly because the field demands a deep understanding of the concepts. And the candidates in consideration need to prove their worth.

Technology has revolutionized the world today. Self-driving cars, voice assistants like Google Home and smart devices like TVs, baby bassinets etc. are now an everyday reality. If you’ve played PokemonGo or the very famous Beat Saber, you have been exposed to another branch in this tree of technology – Augmented Reality (AR).

With thriving progress in the field, AR is a hot segment in today’s job markets. People now have tons of opportunities to hop aboard the AR train. They get to discover and develop innovative ways to enhance the system. And to land a job in this popular field, preparation is key.

Here are 7 most asked questions to help you prepare you for your next AR Developer interview.

1. What are the different types of AR?

AR is of 5 different types: marker-based AR, markerless AR, SLAM based AR, Object recognition and PC based AR.

How different are Marker-based and Marker-less AR?

Marker-based AR is used for marketing and retail purposes in someone’s home. An example would be an app that allows you to visualize objects virtually in your homes before you can actually buy it.

Marker-less AR uses the device’s own hardware. GPS, camera and accelerometer collect information for the AR software.

2. What constraints affect a mobile AR experience?

Technological limitations of a mobile AR experience are:

  1. Memory
  2. Processing power
  3. Graphics capability
  4. Input and output options
  5. Available screen real estate.

3. Are you familiar with game engines? If so, which one(s)?

A game engine is a game-framework software that houses all the necessary tools. These include the required physics, input-output, audio-visual interfaces to build video games. AR applications use game engines as their base upon which further developments are done.

The most commonly used game engines are Unity3D and Unreal. The best way to familiarize yourself with game engines is to download the software and learn from the tutorials.

Unity Engine specific questions:

4. What are the differences between start and awake unity events?

A Start event is called only if the script component is enabled. Otherwise, the performance will get saved.

The Awake function is called when the script instance is being loaded.

5. Why is delta-time used?

Using Time.deltaTime will provide you the time (in seconds) it took to complete the last Read-Only frame. This makes your game frame independent.

C# specific questions:

6. What is the difference between a class and a structure?

Structures are value types whose variables contain the structure’s data. Structures use stack allocation. These are not inheritable, and all the elements are public by default.

Classes are reference types containing a reference to the data. Classes use heap allocation and are inheritable. Variables and constants are private by default. All other elements of a class are public.

7. What is the difference between a method and a function?

Game engines like Unity primarily depend on C#. It is therefore imperative to understand the basics of programming.

A function is a snippet of code that is called by a defined name and can have parameters passed to it. A method is a code snippet that is called by a name associated with an object. It operates on data that is contained within the class.
